Music Scholarships & Competitions
Below is a list of scholarships and competitions GRYS&CO members have been awarded in past years. These opportunities exist outside of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony. See organization websites for more information.
Grand Rapids Community Foundation
Hundreds of scholarships are available for Kent County high school and college students, a few of which are specific to music. Students can apply for many scholarships using a general application; a separate application is required for certain additional scholarships. For details, search for keywords such as music, fine arts, and performing arts.
Grand Rapids Federation of Musicians
Scholarship opportunities are available for:
• Instrumental music students who are high school juniors
• Orchestral string students
• Orchestral double-bass students
Grand Rapids Symphony – Mosaic Scholarship
The Grand Rapids Symphony Mosaic Scholarship provides funds for underrepresented students to take one-on-one lessons with GRS musicians, as well as experience workshops and performances with creative leaders. The scholarship is for one school year and is open to any student aged 12-18 living in or attending school in Kent County who has been playing their instrument for at least one school year.
Kent Philharmonic Orchestra – Young Artist Concerto Competition
Open to Michigan high school students (grades 9-12)

Michigan Federation of Music Clubs – Competitions & Awards
Michigan competitions and awards for students (grades 10-12) studying brass, organ, piano, percussion, strings, voice and woodwinds.
The National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) offers more than $750,000 in competition and award prizes on the local, state and national level.
Stulberg International String Competition
The Stulberg Competition in Kalamazoo, MI, is open to students (ages 19 and under) of violin, viola, cello or double bass.
